At 99 cents, this is a great application to get. Once we are able to create stories directly from the iPhone, it will be even better. Still my use of the current StoryForge application has been a very enjoyable game-making experience.
I was a bit skeptical shortly after my purchase when the program would fail to start up. I had to delete and re-download the program to get it working again. Once you buy it though, if you have to download it again, there is no charge. Alternatively, you can sync the app to iTunes on your computer, delete it from your iPhone, and then re-sync it to your iPhone. That option would be for those of you who are intimidated by the ever-present "Buy Now" thing on the app store.
Although the web application and the iPhone program are fun and easy to use, they each still have some bugs. iVacation is only playable on the web right now (probably because the creator used images that are much wider than 320 pixels wide). The web application is having a problem displaying pictures sometimes, which can be fixed by removing the picture and re-loading it. The StoryForge web application allows you to use quotes in your players Choices, but the quoted choice will appear blank (only in the editor) after saving it.
I had the fortune/misfortune to require tech support. After trying to create a new page from a quoted (now blank) choice, the program froze. Mr. Steil was kind enough to fix it the next day though, and I was quickly back to story-making.
With all that said, I still find this to be an extremely fun, creative process unlike any other. I was able to finish my story and get it featured a day or two later. And since playing these games on the web is free, I was able to broadcast the game I made to all my friends without having to guilt them into buying the iPhone program (or an iPhone for that matter). I still think the iPhone app is worth it though because the images load so much more smoothly and because I can take them anywhere with me.
For those of you who are put off by some of the quickly-made, poorly-written, less-than-fun games:
Try "Purple House".
(Thats the one I made.)
